Some words for today...... Today, as you surely know, is the hundredth anniversary of the outbreak of WWI. All war is terrible and this one was no exception, a total of over 9 million fighting men died, including half a million British killed in the 3 months of the second Battle of Ypres and 60 thousand casualties on the first day of the Battle of the Somme. Many more were wounded, many of whom were maimed for life through gassing, blindness or loss of limbs. These were all young people of your age! The youngest casualty was just 15, having lied about his age. Today, we remember. We remember the courage and devotion of those young people, We remember the huge sacrifices made by those who gave their life and health. We remember that we can stand here tonight speaking English and with all our freedoms because of them. Tonight you are the custodians of their memory, maybe you will join up and become the inheritors of their task to preserve the peace; but whatever your role in life, it was made possible by these young people of a hundred years ago. Lets keep silence for a minute. They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them..............
