Someone asks, what are the best customer development questions to ask before I launch my product? I say: Well, the idea behind all of this isnt to launch per sae, because who are you launching to? Its like going to the Boston Marathon expecting to get first place, without ever training for it. No, instead of launching you email 10 people who seem to be the most likely fit for your product, and ask is this something you would want? Collect feedback, iterate where you feel appropriate, then email 10 more people. Repeat. Eventually, you get to the point where you ask is this something you would pay for? And that is answered by putting a pay button in place. But ultimately, this is the opposite of a launch model, at least at first, because youre not trying to push to everyone at once, but rather growing more slowly, sustainably, and organically. Consider, Facebook, the largest, most used social network on the planet, a site thats so big its changed the course of history -started on a single college campus. Had they tried to launch to everyone with a valid email address in the very beginning, wed all still be using Myspace. Something to think about.
