Someone just the other day told me that since they dont go to - TopicsExpress

Someone just the other day told me that since they dont go to church, and they only study their Bible and pray for the deeper meanings in the scriptures, that they are somehow immune from ever being influenced by the doctrines and teachings of men. This, to me, whenever I run into this, in my honest opinion, is not only naive, but either (unknowingly) ignorant or (knowingly) dishonest. Our culture and society alone has placed doctrinal certainties on us even if we had NEVER read the Bible OR attended a church. For example, the doctrine of hell and a location somewhere in outer space called heaven have been just as much a part of secular culture as church culture. This very weekend there are millions of very UNreligious people celebrating Easter (even attending a church) - who, if you asked them - could not explain to you exactly how Christianity works or how it all pertains to them. Ask any person on the street to give you their thoughts on God, and most of them (Christian or not) will start talking about Him in a way that sounds very much like a conversation about someones (human) uncle. People dont generally talk about God by using terms like Source Energy, or Originating Consciousness, or First Cause... Why? Because our culture has trained people NOT to think or even investigate scientific-based explanations, but to just trustingly accept what yesteryears theologians have for so long presented as unquestionable. Our inherited (yes, inherited) concepts of God are more Egyptian and ancient Greek in origin than Jewish. And you know what? Thats okay. I just want people to be able to acknowledge that fact, thats all. Someone recently told me, It is important to ask the tough questions, but it may be even MORE important to question the age-old answers...
