Someone reminded me a while back about a German dish called Rumtopf - its not really a dish, its a dessert thats basically seasonal fruit layered in a stone crock pot or porcelain dish with sugar and covered in rum. You start it in the beginning of the year and keep layering the fruit as it gets in season and in December youll have a nice concoction of fermented (drunken) fruit in syrup that you can pour over icecream, cakes or whatever you want... some poeple put some of that fruit with a little syrup in a glass and add clubsoda for a fruity cocktail. Traditionally this Rumtopf (rum pot) is kept in the basement where its cool and dark, but since I dont have one and it gets pretty hot here, Ill have to reserve a spot in the fridge for my gallon pickle jar that Im going to use. I have this rum left over from my Christmas rumballs, so Im going to start with a layer of freshly picked strawberries from the field. After next month the blackberries will be ripe and the blueberries after that in June followed by Peaches and plums. I definitely will want some cherries, raspberries and pineapple in there as well - oh, boy, I think its going to be a nice Christmas :-)
