Somerville Basketball has had a Great tradition in Massachusetts High School hoop for many years. Dating back to the 1950s Tech tournament action was a Blessing to all the young high school ballers of the area because it was a Just Reward to those teams that played the game the way it was suppose to be played.....as a team. Those teams good enough to qualify for the TECH were on Cloud Nine for a few reasons. One, that they were good enough as a Team to qualify which meant they had a very successful regular season, also it brought positive attention to their schools, communities and programs / players....and most importantly each player and team that made it ........was GOING TO BE PLAYING AT THE BOSTON GARDEN......where the Pros did their thing A goal of every young baller at the high school level.....Somerville has had its share of great players over the years and none better than Billy Endicott.. Billy was a gym rat like most of us and played ball morning , noon and night especially in the summer. After an illustrious 4 years at the high school he went on to star at the University of Mass @ Amherst and played with Al Skinner, Rick Pitino and Greg Duarte to mention a few. ...there was however, an unfortunate incident that Billy was involved in back in the day ......Billy became the unfortunate victim of a vicious beating at the hands of some punks from a part of Boston that will go without mention. BUT..... True to his personality and character Billy would not let that stop him from playing in his first tech tourney. He left the hospital to play much to the amazement of all that knew him and the severity of his injuries that had resulted from being jumped. There was also an incredible rivalry between Somerville and Cambridge during the 70s with Cambridge having a couple of great players of their own in Gene Walcott and Kevin Clark......Those were the days my friends ......a little tech tournament history....peace to all...22
