Something I will never understand is when people have the mentality that if its not done this specific way then clearly youre an idiot and you shouldnt be a photographer... I dont like over smoothed skin, I dont like if there are hot spots on people, I dont like when you cant tell if its a professional picture or an iphone picture, I dont like matte looks. That does NOT mean that the way I do it is right or that they are wrong. Its a personal feeling and preference. You do not have to like anything I do, there are times I dont even like what I do. No seriously Ill come back like a week later and think Um was I drunk, thats horrendous I dont drink but sometimes I lose my better judgement in the heat of photoshop. I try and fail at EVERY session because I want to try something new and different. It doesnt always work, honestly 85% of the time I fail epically but I still try. There is no right way or wrong way. Everyone starts somewhere, back in the day when I had my first DSLR I was a dummy. I didnt know what M was or RAW. Basically anything before September of 2012 I do not claim ;-) no for real, I dont and you cant make me! I get that being new and charging $25 for 100 edited pictures on a cd is hurting the industry but so is Walmart... There will ALWAYS be someone that is cheaper or better or has better gear or is smarter. If you do nothing but complain then Im very sorry that your life is that miserable. Complaining does not make it better or make them raise their prices. I use to care, I use to care so much. I hated being under cut and losing clients. It filled my entire being until I became this fire breathing monster. I would sit at my computer and get hurt every time a client went to another photographer. I felt like I failed in some way, that I wasnt good enough because if I was, they obviously would have gone to me instead. I know thats not true, it took me a long time to realize it! Maybe that other photographer was running a special or they did an adorable setup and my client saw it and really wanted it. Maybe they just wanted to mix it up a bit and get funky and try something new. Its a hard business to be in but its a 1,000 times harder if you do nothing but look down at people or say hateful things. Support other locals, it maybe hard but its needed and they deserve it! Sometimes it has nothing to do with you but by being nice and saying Wow thats so pretty, love that shot You might just make another photographers day. I use to be expensive and I hated it, it seriously was killing me. I was so stressed out, I spent everyday in a panic induced state that drove me head first straight into depression. It sounds weird I know but it did. By lower my prices it was like a huge relief was lifted off my shoulders, I could do what I love and I could be as crazy as I wanted and it was ok. Just because Im cheaper does not mean Im ruining the industry. I use my business to support my family just like you, but we have different business practices and maybe my overhead is a lot cheaper. Or a 1,000 other reasons. But being cheap in my mind does not make you less worthy. Because if people want you as a photographer they will pay whatever prices you want. They will make it happen if its important to them. In summary there is no right or wrong in photography, its an art and its subject to the eye of the beholder. Prices dont state your worth, I use to think so but I now realize I was wrong. If you need $3000 to be away from your family for 3 hours but Sally Sue needs $40 thats okay. There are clients for both markets :-) so smile, breathe and say something nice to other photographers!
