Something for everyone in the UK to think about. As it turns out, and we all knew it for some time now, EU workers are a real positive!!! Migrants from the EU have made a £22bn net contribution to UK public finances and have not hurt the job prospects of British youngsters, according to a report published on Tuesday. But the report warned that many migrant workers in agriculture, hospitality and construction were being mistreated by employers and paid less than the minimum wage because of lax enforcement of rules. The Migration Advisory Committee inquiry was prompted by concerns about the effect of migrants – who hold around one in six of Britain’s 13m low-skilled jobs – on youth employment. The immigration experts found that the employment rate of the UK-born working age population had been “practically unchanged” by the influx of half a million migrants from central and eastern Europe after the EU expanded in 2004. It also found that “recent” EU migrants – those who arrived from 2001 onwards – had made a net positive contribution to public finances of £22bn, or £2,732 per person per year, in the decade to 2011. By comparison, non-European migrants only contributed a net £162 per person per year over the same period.
