Something got me thinking today. When Sean told me he was judging a cocktail competition with chef Jean George Vonterichten, it immediately brought me back to the time when Macro Pierre White was judging the Diageo Worldclass Competition in 2009. I asked myself a question back then, why would a chef judge a cocktail competition or why would a brand want a chef to judge a cocktail competition? By the way, I do not intend this as dig at anyone at all, merely asking the question. Dont get me wrong, I understand legendary chefs, such as the guys above, have unparalleled palates in-terms of recognizing flavor but to me it was a bit like asking Ludwig Van Beethoven to judge Tupac Shakur or vice versa. Yes they are the same disciplines and but they are entirely different from one another. I understand when assembling a judging committee you would want diversity in backgrounds and philosophies but I could never get my head around it. Ive yet to really see the worlds best bartenders being asked to judge chefs or restaurants but yet we are seeing chefs judge bartenders and bars…? Bartenders understand great flavor when it comes to food but I know for one I certainly wouldnt feel comfortable critiquing the worlds best chefs or restaurants because its simply not my field. Would like to hear your thoughts world…
