Something happened last night for which words seem to fall short. But I feel that there a couple of reasons why I need to at least give it a try. The setting: a Sendai experimental live performance during one of the OFFICIAL NUITS SONORES PAGE events in Lyon. Everything before the show was perfect. Great hospitality, good vibe amongst the artists involved, you name it. The one thing bothering both Yves De Mey - artist page and myself was that we had to play a 900 capacity venue, filled with a (very young) crowd expecting techno and being unresponsive to our experimental live set. The opening DJ was playing peak-time techno, another point of concern. But what we could not have imagined was the total and utter lack of respect, the open display of aggression and hostility and finally the attempts to hurt us physically. Already after five minutes into our set we realised that this audience was not going to give us a chance. They started throwing things at us. A coin hit me right on the head. After 25 minutes a bottle of water hit us and our equipment, and we decided to call it a day. I have NEVER seen such aggression in the context of a musical event. I am still shocked remembering the sight and sound of this mass of mindless, spoiled people who had zero regard for anything but their own immediate egotistical satisfaction. Obviously some mistakes were made: first of all, we should not have been made part of this line-up or venue. Secondly, asking a 3 EUR admission fee will invite al sort of people besides those who are into music - and thats putting it mildly. But even these facts do not justify what happened last night. The level of stupidity was beyond belief. I apologize profoundly to those people in the audience who did appreciate what we were trying to do. I know you were out there, but sadly you were outnumbered by a bunch of egocentric, aggressive morons who had no respect for us nor the people around them. If this is the way things will go in Lyon then you wont see me again.
