Something pretty amazing happened to me today. A few years ago, I made a promise to myself to never be rude to student nurses and to try and be a good, patient teacher. As a student, I had many unfortunate experiences with rude, burnt out, just plain ignorant nurses. Nursing is a tough a career, I understand that, but we are in the business of helping people which certainly includes students. Today, I had a second year student nurse paired with me for the first time. Being newly graduated myself and only working as a full time nurse for the past 6 months, I was a little bit nervous to watch over a student. There is still so much I dont know and so much more I have to learn as a nurse myself, so what could I possibly offer a student in terms of learning? Turns out, the mind remembers so much more then I could have imagined. So many things that i didnt realize I had retained from school came back to me today. I was able to teach and guide a future nurse through what I find simple, mindless tasks but to her were brand new and exciting skills. Today happened to be her second last day of clinical for the semester so she had already been buddied up with a handful of other nurses to learn from. At the end of her shift, she came up to me to tell me she was leaving and thanked me for the best day she has had at clinical so far. She told me that she had learned the most and had been able to do the most with me today. Lastly, she told me that I give her hope to find a job straight out of school which reminded me of how fortunate I am to have a full time position. I am glad I kept my promise and did everything I could to help facilitate a students learning. I know I have a long career ahead and many years to become bitter and burnt out myself, but to have just a handful of shifts like today to remind me of how lucky I am will certainly make all the hard work worth it. I couldnt be more grateful for my student today so a huge thank you to her.
