Something to think about: I dont know about you but, I learned - TopicsExpress

Something to think about: I dont know about you but, I learned something in my public school years and I always passed it on to my students. But there are two things in particular that I see misspelled very often where I do not think it is a typo. I am wondering if I was in one of the last classes to be taught these things? Did you learn to spell separate by remembering that there is a rat in sepARATe? And did you learn that you see it today, you saw it yesterday or last week and you HAVE SEEN it many times? And did your teachers not tell you consistently that people sit and hens set? Mostly spelling is no longer taught as a separate subject and I agree that aside from those little sayings like,I before e except after c and when it says a as in neighbor an weigh... that are very helpful but, they are only helpful on some things and you cannot actually teach someone to spell. I do think that some people just have an ear for language and spelling and others dont, it is most assuredly a gift. I NEVER told a child to go look it up if they asked me how to spell a word!! That is totally the wrong thing to do. I think you know why. Mostly I think spelling is no longer seen as important but to tell you the truth there are many post on here that I do not understand because I cannot make sense of them so I give up. I took an art class in college and on an exam, if we misspelled a word it was five points GONE down the drain. I lived my college years with a dictionary that felt like it was attached at the hip. You would be amazed at the assumptions people make base on your writing. I write to senators and representatives often and you can bet that there are no misspelled words because I would loose points in their I should pay attention to this voter column. We may not all have a natural spelling ability but we can all use a dictionary. But most importantly we should all care to get our own language right and have people take what we have to say seriously. A dictionary is not expensive and is your best friend when you have something to say and want people to believe you.
