Sometimes I feel as though I spend more time on everything going - TopicsExpress

Sometimes I feel as though I spend more time on everything going on with Hannah Grace, that I often neglect my other kiddos! (not that I do, but seems that way sometimes) I have to share this with you all. You will probably be seeing me post a LOT about September being Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, but not only is it that, but it is also, Hydrocephalus Awareness Month. What is Hydrocephalus you ask? Hydrocephalus (hidro-sefa-lus) is an abnormal accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) within cavities of the brain called ventricles. When our son, Connor Jones, was 3 years old, his doctor ordered a CT scan of the brain after his sister had been recently diagnosed with a rare genetic disorder, and after he had frequent office visits for headaches, stomach aches, and vomiting spells. CT scan revealed that the right side of Connors brain was fluid. At 4 years old, he was referred to a Neurosurgeon at LSU-Shreveport who later performed surgery to try to correct this condition. They cut open his skull and preformed an exploratory surgery called a third ventriculostomy which they used a scope to find the cause. They did find an Arachnoid cyst, removed it, and closed up his skull. However, this did not fix his problem with Hydrocephalus. The doctors believe that as Connor was growing, one of the membranes in his ventricles did not open, causing the fluid to back up. It would take another operation to prove their theory, and they decided not to proceed with an additional surgery, nor did they shunt him. To this day, the right side of Connors brain is mostly fluid. He did receive yearly CT Scans, but was released by the Physicians, and told he would live a normal life as he was. We are to just monitor any changes in activity like: frequent headaches, balance issues, changes in vision, speech, or hearing. He is now 15 years old, and doing just fine. He is an Honor Student at his High School and we couldnt be prouder of all his accomplishments. He is definitely a determined young man. We love you, Connor!!!
