Sometimes I found some people who seem to inherit the spirit of Maos Cultural Revolution, which had brought about the collapse of Chinas cultural achievement. Countless artists and intellectuals were killed in the name of building an egalitarian communist society, which were, unfortunately, promoted and encouraged by the very populist-minded intellectuals who eventually succeeded to grab the power for the next decade. Then it could be the reason to be hanged or shot or in some cases, beaten to death to have a successful education or career as an artist, scientist or scholar and whatever is thought to be different from general, monolithic view of people. It was the time when making efforts could bring you death. I happened to visit a facebook page liked by one of my FB friend this morning, which promotes the slogan like no description about your college and class. I could understand the motive of the movement because it was started in the southern region of this country where authoritarian social interactions are still prevalent and common. However, after reading the explanation on the page about the goal of the campaign, I thought to myself that it seems to be avoiding more critical issues to put more emphasis on their motto. Is it something you should be ashamed of if you made efforts to get admission to better colleges? Is it something you should be ashamed of if you happened to be somebodys senior because of the year of your admission to a college? I dont think so. They are just facts and at the same time personal achievement. What causes problems in our society is not whether you open your information on education or age, but the attitude of people who attempts to turn this information into a kind of power that can harm open communication and fair competition among people. What matters most is to change this society to more open one where all of us can believe that were offered the same condition for competition based on our proven achievement and capability, regardless of our colleges and ages. Entering a good college means somebody was entitled to have a good start but it never guarantees the result of that start, which is the reason we cant trust educational background entirely when we assess others achievement and capability. Hiding things will not solve this root cause that has crippled this society for more than half-century. When it comes to social equality, we should be very cautious not to repeat what happened in China during Cultural Revolution years ago which turned out to be one of the most severe damage to modern Chinas social evolution. Populism is just one step away from us as it has always been through our history. I found some posts blaming a few politicians whore regarded as being progressive in Korea for not deleting their record of education. And I didnt understand it because I didnt want to set my own bar on progress as low as theirs. If you consider yourself intellectual or intelligent, you should be very careful when you speak out your opinion in front of various people because your nonsensical argument can give birth to another false desire among people which usually ends up with creating another populist power that contributes to the hardened monolithic society like this one.
