IRS IS WRONG: Treasure Trove is a legal term used to describe money or gold or silver that was hidden (with the intent to recover later) underground or in places such as cellars or attics, that has been found by another party and where the treasure seems old enough for it to be presumed that the true owner is dead and the heirs undiscoverable. The gold on the shipwreck Central America was not hidden, it was lost and should not be taxed as though it was Treasure Trove. forbes/sites/robertwood/2014/05/06/gold-bars-pulled-from-1850s-shipwreck-taxable-says-irs/
