Sometimes, I get reminded that Id rather work on something that has never been touched, instead of something that was recently worked on. Today, I got the Wilcox-Gay wireless record player in the mail and the chassis had indeed been recapped; but, whoever did it was a bit of a slob and I had to clean up the mess. The drive mechanism was falling out of the player as a result of bolts working loose in shipping (these bolts were modern - not the original ones from 1941. Someone had replaced the rubber on the idler wheel with an O-ring and they used the wrong kind of motor mounting grommets, along with a bunch of added washers to situate the motor in its proper position. It also appears that they did not properly lubricate the spindle bearing and the motor bearings. As a result of all this, the drive mechanism sounded like a noisy pulpwood truck. The O-ring may end up working OK; but, it certainly does not have the grip that the original rubber would have had. During all this, I accidently allowed two of the motor stand-offs to roll off into the abyss of my shop (otherwise known as the shop floor). As that point, I was too frustrated to look for them. So, Im sure theyll be there tomorrow. In a little while, Ill unwind and watch Dragnet on Cozi TV.
