Sometimes I really wish the Bass Pro Shop wasnt right next to the Movie Theater. I went to see Thor: The Dark World today, and got the times mixed up. The 3:15 was a 3D show, so I had to wait for the 2D at 3:55. Killed time by going into the Bass Pro Shop and checking to see what they had in stock. The finally had the Ruger .45, the HK USP .45, the S&W M&P .45 and the GLOCK 21 in, so I could actually compare them side by side. The HK is a definite no. I dont know what idiot designed that gun, but that has got to me the dumbest design for a magazine release Ive ever seen. Also, add to that the fact that its $430 more than any of the others, and its got an exposed Hammer, which I didnt want anyway, and yeah, just not interested in that at all. The Ruger is nice in the .45. The more I hold it, the more I like it. The problem is, its freaking huge. The back strap on the grip is too large, not that big an issue because its changeable, but the rest of the gun is just big compared to both the GLOCK and the Smith & Wesson M&P. I also dont like the stainless steel finish compared to the basic black of the GLOCK and M&P, but like the backstrap, not much of an issue, since I plan to duracoat whatever I end up getting anyway. The M&P remains a favorite. With the .45 Id need to swap out the backstrap, as the standard size is a bit to big for me, but since it comes with three, one larger and one smaller, this isnt an issue. I also really like the three dot site on the M&P. I was most surprised by the GLOCK. Instead of the Standard 21, they had the 21 G4, and on the G4, theyve redesigned the magazine release. My main problems with the GLOCKs to date have been the fact that the Magazine release was in an awkward position for me, but the G4 solves this nicely. The GLOCK 21 G4 is not quite the joy to hold that the M&P is, but its tempting for the simple reason that GLOCKS are so popular I would think accessories would be easier to find. I still need to get to a range, rent one of each for the day, and put a few rounds down range before I make a final decision as to which I want, but GLOCK is definitely back on the table, as long as I stick to the G4 models. In a side note, I also compared the Remington 870 to the Winchester Super X. I swear, Winchester must be making shotguns for Hobbits. I dont think Ive ever held a gun that was less comfortable. The only thing remotely likable about that gun was the fiberoptic sight. The Remington on the other hand felt fantastic. Wasnt crazy about the slide release, but I suspect that could be fixed by a good gunsmith and spending some time breaking the action in so it isnt quite so stiff. All in all, it was a pretty fun way to spend an hour. Oh, and Thor was pretty good too.
