Sometimes I worry that we will shrink back from the quieter and deeper parts of our work because their practices and appearance dont fit into traditional paradigms of how work gets done. Even after years of practicing, it still gets noisy in my head with old voices and judgments. It can seem frivolous to sit and stare out windows, to read a good book, to rest weary muscles in a warm bath. It takes a certain kind of internal permission to let ourselves be quiet, to put our house in order--not just figuratively but also literally. But if we neglect these seasons and times and practices because it doesnt look like we are DOING anything, what gets lost? Is our inner compass drowned out? Does everything we ARE doing have speed at the cost of depth? It is too easy to lose along the way the very thing we turned to our creative work to find: Ourselves. Maybe we can all give ourselves a little permission today to do whatever we need to replenish, reconnect with the invisible help all around us, and to rest. There is always space (if we make it) to listen. To breathe.
