Sometimes, people may perceive their health or disease in the reward/punishment model. For example, why did this happen to me? Im a good person This may be a reflection of the conditioning many of us grew up with ~ if you behaved inappropriately to your parents, your cultures, or religions standards, you were punished - went to bed without food, not allowed to go to a party, or made to feel guilty and shameful. An extension of that can be associated with your health. Some symptom or disease has appeared, you are in discomfort, so it must mean you have done something wrong. In regards to the mind-body connection, this thought pattern will contribute negatively to your health, by supporting a network of stress hormones. Underlying this belief may be guilt or shame - which has likely been there since you were a child. It may blossom into a need to be good, do what is right, and suppress aspects of your self and creativity that may not be accepted by your tribe. And no one wants to be exiled from their tribe. It may also influence the good health that you are deserving of, no matter what your actions are. In my naturopathic practice, I have seen this reflected in an imbalanced Pineal gland. The pineal gland is responsible for feeling happiness. It also controls the endocrine system (hormones), and is a major part of the immune system. If this gland has been suppressed due to a persons psychology, or a toxin such as flouride, the persons health can be compromised in a major way. Acupuncture, qi gong, yoga, cognitive behaviour therapy, herbs such as St. Johns Wort and Passionflower, homeopathics, flower essences, and removing toxins from the body specifically target this blockage. Delving into your beliefs is an excellent strategy to initiate when faced with a health concern. Journaling, meditation, and counselling can greatly impact both the psychological and physical manifestations of your health.
