Sometimes we find those rocks that have that distinct scaling - TopicsExpress

Sometimes we find those rocks that have that distinct scaling pattern that agates typically have. They are tricky. They can come in all shapes, sizes, colors, they can be opaque, have banded variations, they actually mimic an agate in looks. This is probably one of the toughest rocks to discard because it always makes you wonder. The trick, when wet, does it dry faster than an actual agate? And does it feel as waxy as an agate? Agates are translucent vs. opaque. Sadly though, when broke open, this is what you get....quartzite. A little lesson by Paula Handey.
