Sometimes we get very tired campaigning and recruiting donors and it all seems to much for us. Today reminded me why we are doing this. 18 months ago In hospital I met a lovely lady who like me desperately needed a donor. I thought to myself how fortunate she was as her sister was an exact match for her.. her devoted husband and devastated children told us that although her sister was an exact match she was refusing to help her. As hard as it was for me, Kas and many of you reading this to understand, her sister continued to refuse to help her and let her die. It has been 12 months since she died and today Kas and I attended a service organised by her husband and children to honour her memory. Both of us have been upset all day.. I remember her husband coming to my bedside when I was in hospital and saying " who is going to help us" I remember saying someone will uncle.. A total stranger came to my aid and saved my life and sadly his wife did not find an unrelated donor.. It reminded my why we set up "The Rik Basra Leukamia Campaign" we want to help Anthony Nolan recruit as many donors as we can onto the register. At the point of need everyone should have a donor and have a chance of life. This lady had everything to live for she was a much loved wife, mother and grandmother.
