Somewhat shorter walk at Blandy because they were doing their yearly meadow burn. Every year they burn 1/3 of the meadow/grassland area. This helps keep trees and shrubs from encroaching into the meadow, helps to control invasive non-native species and releases nutrients of dead plant material for incorporation back into the soil. The wind was from the east, so the majority of the walk was fine, but we avoided the areas which were smoky. The burn was quite a sight. It was alright to be impressed with how fast the fire moved and how little it left behind because this is done with intent, in a controlled manner. The landscape post-fire is blacked and barren looking. Next year, however, plant growth will be especially vigorous and lush. Ma Nature does this all the time and its amazing how quickly burned areas are re-vegetated. I think revegetated is a word; if not, it should be.
