Somewhere in Eastern Libya. In the first verse the singer, addressing his tearful eye, says O weeping one, avoid them/ those delusions, /the many that surround you. At least thats what I understood. Eastern Libya, a region of sheep herders, has an old, profound poetic tradition, and a poetic form called allam, a haiku-like form rich in allegory and symbols. The weeping eye here is crying over the beloved, the many delusions of being loved, or recovery of love. And as it is often the case, when we speak of love we can cover almost all aspects of life. The delusions, or dreams, of a country at peace are perhaps best understood, or can only be meaningful, when expressed through the prism of love, the giver of meaning to everything. So thats allam and poetry for. But theres much more to admire here. The father, I think it is the father, playing his clarinet/horn while his expert drummer/singer son leads the audience into song. The house whose stones are unadorned, the simple meal and drink, and the little television glaring but ignored. And the reach for music because it brings out of us what we treasure most, our vulnerability, our sorrows, and our unbreakable bond to love.
