Sondheim is like Shakespeare to me. I picked up the CD of Sondheims Into The Woods at Mountain View Public Library. I was a high school sophomore; I had just discovered I was in the country illegally. Now the movie version, courtesy of Disney and starring Meryl Streep, opens on Christmas Day. One of the songs in the musical cut me so deeply as a teenager that Im not quite sure I can see it on film: Mother cannot guide you. Now youre on your own. Only me beside you. Still, youre not alone. No one is alone. Truly. No one is alone. Sometimes people leave you. Halfway through the wood. Others may deceive you. You decide whats good. You decide alone. But no one is alone.
