Song Blog 4 - Brother Bird “Happy Father’s Day – Get a tattoo.” That’s what was inscribed on the coffee mug our daughter Josie gave me a few years ago. I have nothing against tattoos, and I admire the beautiful and artistic ones others have. But I am not a tattoo guy. I like to think that has nothing to do with the pain involved. But if I did get inked, it would be with Brother Bird. Josie drew him when she was six or seven, and he is quite striking: long blue legs, feathers of turquoise, magenta, orange and yellow. And Brother Bird is inspiring, as well. “Brother Bird” is the title song of the second album I did when I was having a go at being a “folk rock for groovin’ families” music performer in 2006-10. The songs on those albums were about being a kid – observing the world with childlike speculation and curiosity. (You can find the albums on Spotify if you’re curious, or I’ll give you free copies – I still have plenty.) I like to think I’m a musical journalist, chronicling the Withrow experience as we age, evolve, observe, and interact. And we’re still kids at heart, and I still love Brother Bird.
