Song review: Ninety-Four Band: Facebook/columbusmakesmusic Location: Brisbane, Australia Date of Release: April 14 2014 Genre: Pop Punk Reviewer: DeadParrot Alright so full disclosure on this one - I am a total Columbus fan boy. I play their last release religiously. So much so that not a weekend goes by without me yardcouching with my imaginary hos (who ludda dee) and getting our drunk on to dem awesome Columbus feelz. Their last release, Sad Songs and Sing-Alongs, is packed to the rafters with instantly catchy hooks, top notch playing from the drummer in particular, lots of feels and a great atmosphere. Did I mention that those songs are also really catchy? I mean they are so catchy that youd be forgiven for thinking that Lyndsay Lohan and Amanda Bynes bumped uglies to combined their respective STDs and release it under the name Columbus. But I tell you this because Im sooo dissapointed. This track has been sitting on my To Do list for a while now, and Ive given it a fair few listens. Actually, thats an understatement. Most of you pleb bands would be jealous with the amount of attention Ive given this track. But its not a good thing in this case. I keep going back to it hoping that Im missing something, or that if I hear it in a different frame of mind then it will be different. Alas, twas not the case. This song is just not what I love about Columbus. Lets start with the vocals. Arguably the greatest asset this band has is the vocalists ear for a catchy tune. This kid has it. I remember listening to the last EP for the first time and I couldnt get Coffee, Desks and Promises out of my head for a week. But when you listen to this new track, Ninety-Four, you forget the song instantly. Thats what my major problem was with this release. Id listen to the song, then forget how it went. So Id listen to it again. The terrible cycle of amnesia was so heart-breaking because I genuinely heart what these boys do. Even writing this right now, having only heard it ten minutes ago, I still cant remember any of it. As far as the musicianship on this thing, there is nothing that really grabs my attention. I mean, its pretty standard pop-punk fair. Double Time - Pause - Double Time. The bass...is there. Guitars lack their usual flare. The production on this thing is on par with Sad Songs.... Everything is clear and sits well in the mix. There is at least that familiar Columbus atmosphere, even if its just hiding for the moment. Boys. My honest thoughts on this are that you were bound to write a relatively weak song eventually. I just hoped it wouldnt be so soon. Or maybe what happened was that you rushed back into the studio without fleshing out the ideas as best you could? Everything: Getting nostalgic for an EP thats less than a year old / 10 (5/10) https://youtube/watch?v=kPgB2eHJi_Y
