Songwriters Showcase X featuring The Pistoleros Studio 7:30 p.m., Dec. 6 Tempe-based roots-rockers The Pistoleros join host Walt Richardson for a night of original music recorded for television and Internet broadcast. One of the true architects of the “Tempe Sound”, The Pistoleros started out as Mill Avenue mainstays, The Chimeras. The legendary Doug Hopkins formed the group with Mark and Lawrence Zubia, Scott Andrews and Mark Riggs. The Chimeras quickly exploded on the local scene, but Riggs and Hopkins departed the group soon after. Ultimately, Gary Smith and Thomas Laufenburg replaced Hopkins and Riggs and the crew forged onward landing a major label deal with Hollywood Records. Changing their moniker to The Pistoleros, they released their Hollywood debut, Hang On To Nothing, which also included My Guardian Angel written by Hopkins and Mark Zubia. Hang On To Nothing also featured songwriting collaborations with The Jayhawks Gary Louris and Mark Perlman, the Smithereens Pat DiNizio and Radney Foster. The Pistoleros furthered their recorded legacy with a self-titled effort which included co-writes with Jesse Valenzuela of Gin Blossoms and producer Marty Frederikson. In 2002, the band marked their 10th anniversary with the concert collection, “Bars and Guitars”. In 2012 they celebrated 20 years with the re-release of their first recording Mistaken For Granted. The Pistoleros are currently demoing new material for their upcoming Fervor Records release at the label’s Bomb Shelter Studio.
