Soon, I will be heading out to my grandmas Rosary (funeral tomorrow). As I flew from Atlanta and drove the 2+ hours from KC to Cherryvale, I reflected on her life. She was 100 years young. Everyone leaves a legacy. Some legacies are easy to pin down: Martin Luther King, Jr (equality), Steve Jobs (higher standard), Mother Teresa (service), etc and others remain harder to define. My grandma left a Legacy of Family. My fondest memory was when I was assigned a genealogy (family tree) for a college assignment. I called her and when I told her the reason for my call... her voice rose - I could feel the smile on the other end of the line. She lit up! It was the longest conversation we ever had. At the reunion that year, she greeted me like she was waiting for me to get there - even then close to 80 and sharp as a tack. She asked how the findings went - we talked the Irish strand of Mahers, the Australian strand of Mahers, and the royalty that grew out of the Strecker strand. She was enthralled and quite honestly, this was one of my most enjoyable college assignments. For many reasons, but perhaps most of all because I saw a passion from my grandma that I had never seen before. You look at my uncles and aunts, my cousins, nieces, and nephews and my brothers and sisters, and you see one thing in common - good people. Ive traveled a lot and Ive met hundreds of thousands of people and after all those travels, Im so proud to be a part of this family - to be surrounded by such great, loving, generous, fun-loving, and genuine people. Martha Isle Maher leaves a Legacy of Family. You can judge a life by the lives changed and lives touched and I dont think there is any better legacy than to have changed and touched the lives of those closest to you - family. RIP Grandma. #Blessings, Michael
