Soroti hospital runs out of blood By Agencies Sunday, September 15 2013 Soroti- Soroti government hospital has run short of blood, a thing that has put many patients’ lives in danger. A senior staff at the hospital, who declined to be named, said the hospital ran out of blood on Thursday and by Friday most patients in need of blood were being turned away. According to the medical forms of four children seen by URN blood Groups O and A are out of stock. Another medical staff told URN, a news agency, that there was only one unit of group B blood available in the hospital. He told the news agency that 12 children admitted at the Paediatrics Unit were supposed to get blood transfusion. The hospital director, Dr Emmanuel Batiibwe, told URN on Friday evening that they were waiting for blood supplies from Mbale Hospital. Ms Akello Stella, a resident of Dakabela in Soroti, said her eight-year-old child was in critical condition and among the 12 patients queuing up for blood transfusion. Mary Apolot, a pupil of Dakabela Primary School, was lying helpless in the ward. Mr Charles Egau, an uncle to Apolot, told URN that the doctors were doing their best to save the children but the shortage of blood was proving a huge obstacle. Mr Joseph Ecweru, a 40-year-old resident of Jalam Village, Olwa Parish, Morungatuny Sub-county in Amuria District, said his two-year-old child was anaemic and needed blood urgently. Soroti Hospital has been supplying blood units to other health centres in the districts of Amuria, Soroti, Katakwi, Kaberamaido and Serere. Two months ago, a major blood shortage hit many hospitals in the country. Earlier reports In June, the media reported that Uganda was struggling to resolve a countrywide shortage of blood caused by interruptions in the supply of blood donor kits and testing reagents. The shortage had lasted one month, and at least 15 people reported died in the east. [email protected]
