Sorry for the long post people, but this may save someone from lightening up their wallet: This morning we received a call from Scott from the Police Institute who was selling advertising in a police publication. He wanted a show of support from local businesses to purchase an $375 business card sized ad for a publication to be released in July. He was very keen to get us to sign up immediately to show our support for the important work that the police do in the community. When I asked Scott to send us a media kit because we are currently planning all our marketing for the year and being strategic about it, he didnt seem to know what I meant. When I asked him to email me some further information he said it would be best if he called again. When I enquired about what the publication would look like he gave me a web address police.org.au which diverted to the Australasian Institute of Policing, who seem to publish a regular academic journal, but not a community publication. When I called the WA Police Media section to let them know about this call, the officer I spoke to laughed and said oh that old one - been going around for years - and if you search Google for police publication scam, youll get results going back at least 10 years. Takeaways for small business: A) Beware unsolicited sales callers that cant provide any backup information about their publication - particularly if youve never heard of it and they try pressure you into purchasing to demonstrate your good citizenship. B) Dont buy ad hoc advertising that you havent planned for in your marketing strategy. That is all :)
