Sortelha Castle and its medieval village, Portugal. The first written document known about this village dates back to the 11th century when the castle was built to defend the border regions between Portugal and its neighbouring kingdom of León to the east and the muslims to the south. The village would born in 1187 when King D.Sancho I took measure to repopulate the site around the castle. In 1228, king D.Sancho II gave the village its first foral chart.
