South African Communist Party, North West Province, Statement 29 January 201 Mathunjwa Makes Mineworkers His Profit-Maximizing Point Anyone exposing this may not survive long The South African Communist Party (SACP) in the province of North West has closely been following the developments in the mining industry characterized by anarchy and violence, job losses, worker hatred, etc., brought about by the introduction of the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU) in the Platinum sector, Karee and in the whole of Impala, Anglo Platinum and Lonmin mining areas. The mainstream media has not been following up and scrutinizing its own created hero, Mathunjwa. In the early days of the emergence of the anarchy in the Rustenburg platinum belt when workers, police and security companies personnel were killed earlier than the Marikana Massacre and up to the day of the Massacre, as the SACP we issued statements and called for both Mathunjwa and the late Steve Kolekile to be made the main perpetrators responsible for the whole situation. The developments within AMCU in the past weeks are now pointing to the correctness of our call. The South African society, media, mining industry and the international community, more specifically Mineworkers and their families, are informed about Mathunjwa and how he uses the plight of Mineworkers as the basis of accumulating wealth privately. The character is filthy rich and his wife is operating more than four businesses, on the backdrop of Mathunjwa being credited to be the most relevant trade unionist for the Mineworkers plight, which is misplaced. Mathunjwa has promised workers heaven on earth, exploiting the necessity to have their wages to be looked at by the employers, the democratic state and the African National Congress (ANC) led government. The financial status of mine and other workers and the level of their indebtedness created a situation whereby workers believe and follow any person who appears to be fighting for the improvement of their wages. Records from the department of labour for registration of trade unions are almost sky-rocketing in the same way as with the records at the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) on registration of political Parties. The complaint by the group of workers about Mathunjwas leadership, AMCU not being operated properly, Mathunjwas role on sowing hatred amongst workers, his role on the job losses and destruction of quality jobs in the mining industry, are almost the same reasons why Mathunjwa was necessarily and correctly expelled from NUM. This revelation should be seriously looked at and followed up by workers against the people who introduced Mathunjwa to them - they are now speaking from experience. Mineworkers should find better credible and reliable organizations to be members of, and elect people with integrity and trustworthiness to lead them. With everything we have known before his populism entrenched in the Platinum sector, and this correct revelation, Mathunjwa does not deserve to lead the Mineworkers. The danger is whether the workers who are questioning this self-appointed Kingship of AMCU will ever be spared their lives because nobody dares question the King and survives. More than 15 National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) shop stewards have been mercilessly killed only because the King lied and said there was R12 500 which Lonmin was prepared to offer to the workers and according to the King the NUM was the reason why these workers were not given this money. Now the same King has forgotten that he said this (13 August 2012, which is the only reason why NUM stewards were killed en masse thereafter), he now has taken workers to a strike demanding a minimum wage of R12 500 that he said was there long time ago. Mathunjwa does not have the workers demands at heart, but ONLY because he is enriching himself and his family through workers membership subscriptions, then wage increases mean an increase to subscription and ultimately more money for the family. As the SACP North West Province we call for: life style audit to both Mathunjwa and his wife, by SARS; protection of the group of workers who have started exposing King Mathunjwa, and the strengthening of safety and security for all Mineworkers; mining industry summit, to deal with the current challenges the industry is facing, including the possibility of the implementation of the August 2006 Parliamentary motion (i.e. investigation to be done on the living and working conditions of the Mineworkers); NEDLAC should coordinate a special session for the mining industry with the view to develop and start a process of Sectoral Determination on the salaries of Mineworkers to define the entry level in the Industry.
