For the record, in all sincerity, this is a (tongue-in-cheek?) symbol par excellence of what I hate most about my other job, writing and publishing. I love to write; I love to edit; I love to collaborate with others on projects that matter (and evidently I love semi-colons). But I absolutely hate the marketing aspects involved (i.e., all the self-promoting one has to do in the social media world in order for ones books to sell). Over the years Ive become an introvert, and it feels awkward to have to constantly ask for attention. Surely theres got to be a way to strike a better balance here. While I was writing my first book several years ago, I remember Carol Howard Merritt saying that its easier to write a book than to sell a book, and I thought to myself, No way. But over the years Ive learned just how right she is. One has to be okay with shameless self-promoting, over and over again, even if one isnt comfortable with it (apologies, Facebook friends). Some authors are really good at doing this without sounding narcissistic or pretentious; while others have a long way to go ;). I wonder how other authors feel about this? cc: Nick Larson Aric Clark Christian Piatt Derek Penwell
