South Korea, despite being a vibrant and free democracy admired - TopicsExpress

South Korea, despite being a vibrant and free democracy admired around the world, has national security laws under which it imprisons people for even VISITING the websites and social media accounts of anti-state elements (READ: North Korea) and also takes strict action against anyone posting controversial material online or uttering/publishing it offline that could disturb political and social stability (its another matter that sometimes the threat of defamation lawsuits under this law has stifled any meaningful debate on political matters, especially during elections). Similarly in Europe, Holocaust denial is punishable by jail-time in spite of concerns for freedom of speech. Perhaps its time our country passed similar measures to ward off sectarian destabilization and silence anti-state forces. This needs to be under an institutionalized mechanism instead of ad hoc and impromptu like its being done now. tribune.pk/story/633193/govt-orders-crackdown-on-hate-speech-online
