#South_Korea #UPP From South Koreas Unified Progressive Party Facing Dissolution December 17, 2014 Dear Sir/Madam I hope this letter finds you well. My name is AHN Dong-seop and I am the secretary general of the Unified Progressive Party(UPP) in South Korea. I would like bring your attention to an on-going adjudication in the Constitutional Court of Korea: the dissolution of our party, the UPP. Today the Constitutional Court announced the date of sentence as Dec. 19, 2014. There are just two days before nine judges at the Constitutional Court will make a decision to dissolve the UPP or not. Around 100,000 members of the UPP didn’t expect the ruling of sentence would be arranged this year because the final plea was just held on Nov. 25. The Constitutional Court gave no indication of its sentencing schedule when final pleas were heard. I just was told a lot that there was heavy pressures to let the Constitutional Court make a decision in this year. We believe that there could be no more harmful for Koreas democracy, social integration and constitutional justice if the Constitutional Court of Korea made a decision to dissolve a political party that won 13 seats (out of a total of 300) in the last 2012 parliamentary elections. We hope that your attention will encourage the government and the judiciary to avoid such a regrettable outcome.
