Southern Zone c’ship kicks off The National, Monday August 11th, 2014 ALOTAU is set to prove a point when they open the Papua New Guinea Rugby Football League’s Southern Zone rugby league selection trials against Motu Koita at Iarowari Oval today. The team from the Milne Bay provincial capital is among 16 teams from 15 PNGRFL affiliated leagues from the Southern region that will be competing over the next four days at Sogeri. Alotau league president Willie Waikaidi said as newcomers to the scene last year they had picked a strong team to uphold the ‘Hidomo’ name. “We reached the quarter-finals last year, but this time I believe we can do better as we know what the competition is like from last year’s experience,” Waikaidi said. The Hidomo team will be led by skipper and former Port Moresby Wanderers rugby union player Terence Torea. Their opponents, Motu Koita, will be a tough team to handle with the players predominantly from the league stronghold Hanuabada and other nearby villagers. Alotau: Billy Tokakap Jnr, Allan Piado, Andrew Moses, Leo Sarea, Torea, Amos Dademo, Paul Geruwaga, Paul William, James Harrison, John Wingi, Lennie Ivo, Iso Pondo, Lloyd Laurie. This match will be followed by an Under-16 match between NCD and Central and then the NCD heavies Suburban and Port Moresby Rugby League face off. Southern confederation chairman Gwaibo Mairi said the official opening would be at 11am after the third match. Guests include PNGRFL CEO Brad Tassel, Central Governor Kila Haoda, NCD Governor Powes Parkop, Eda Ranu chairman Mary Karo and Koiari LLG president Ogi David.
