Southwest Symphony delights in ‘Pomp and Pizzazz’ Southwest Symphony Orchestra music director Gary Caldwell is putting the finishing touches on the concert lineup for the symphony’s 33rd season. “With the theme ‘Pop and Pizzazz,’ you know it’s going to be a spectacular season,” says Caldwell. Here are the highlights: » Oct. 25, Halloween “Spooktacular:” Caldwell leads the symphony in tantalizing music of the season featuring popular classical classics. Anticipate some special effects lighting and other extraordinary highlights in this musical treasure for persons of all ages. This concert will also coincide with an educational outreach for students of Washington County School District earlier in the day. “This opportunity introduces students to the fascinating sounds of various instruments in a symphony orchestra, and the students will see how musicians work together to produce such inspiring music,” says Caldwell. » Nov. 1, “One Small Step:” This event chronicles the history of space flight through music. Billed as “an extraordinary adventure to a place where the past and the future collide,” the work is set to the music of Aaron Copland and presented in high definition video programming. Expect also to experience Richard Wagner’s “Christopher Columbus Overture,” music from “Star Trek,” “Apollo 13” and other great works with a space theme. » Dec. 1 and 2, Handel’s “Messiah:” “Messiah, a Sacred Oratorio,” is a lifelong Southern Utah Christmas tradition and sets the mood for the season’s festivities. Savor the brilliance of this immortal masterpiece. “Messiah” is among the most often performed works in the history of classical music. Admission is free to the public both evenings. » Feb. 7, 2014, “Sweet Suites:” Just in time for Valentine’s Day, the symphony plays some of the most romantic music “suites” in the universe. Surprise that special someone by attending an evening filled with music from our heart to yours. » Mar. 28, 2014, Youth “Concerto Classic:” The 2014 Youth Concerto Classic promises to continue the tradition of showcasing fine young musicians from our area whose talents take your breath away. These dedicated, delightful prodigies demonstrate music education at its best.
