Southwest Virginia Community College to Offer Carpentry Program. Southwest Virginia Community College offers a Career Studies Certificate (CSC) in Carpentry. The courses for the program are offered during the day on campus. This is an entry level program focusing on the basic skills needed to work in the construction trades. The Carpentry CSC is designed to prepare students to enter a profession as a skilled laborer for all types of construction trades, as a home remodel technician or as an apprentice carpenter working under the supervision of a master builder. Carpenters may build homes by erecting framework, walls and roofs, and installing doors, windows, flooring, and paneling. They may work in areas of nonresidential construction for school expansions, road improvements, and bridge replacements. Many work with specialized contractors to install hardwood flooring, erect scaffolding, and also work on major highway projects, office buildings, boats, and manufacturing plants. To register or for additional information, contact the Business, Engineering and Industrial Technology Division at Southwest Virginia Community College by calling 276.964.7277, by emailing [email protected], or visiting sw.edu/beit/.
