Southwinds E-mail Encourager 1 John 3:20 “whenever our hearts condemn us. For God is greater than our hearts, and he knows everything.” Guilt is one of the most stifling emotions one can experience. If we did not feel any guilt we would live undisciplined, hedonistic lives with no concern for others. John is addressing feelings of guilt when he says, “Whenever our hearts condemn us.” Guilt is condemnation by the heart. Like pain, guilt alerts us to a problem. However, an excessive amount of either pain or guilt can be extremely harmful. John is giving us the cure for excess guilt: God. We have enough burdens to carry throughout the day without adding to them. Why not give God the excessive guilt by confessing the cause of your guilt? Since God is greater than our hearts, he can lift the burden of guilt, if you will let Him. John P DiMarzio, Friday, August 2, 2013
