Spain to be Malawis ambassador to the EU The Spanish government has disclosed it will be Malawis ambassador to the European Union as one way of strengthening bilateral cooperation between the two countries. Roman Oyarzun Marchisi who is the Spanish Permanent Representative to the United Nations disclosed this at the Spanish Permanent Mission to the UN in New York on Friday where the two countries signed a Memorandum of understanding. Marchisi signed for the Spanish government while Malawis Foreign Affairs Minister, Dr George Chaponda signed on behalf of the Malawi Governmnet. Briefing the Malawi media after the signing ceremony Marchisi said; We have an MOU by which we will strengthen our political relations on permanent basis with Malawi. We will establish a framework of cooperation efforts in Malawi as members. He said they discussed, during the signing ceremony, specifics of talking to each other on the slogan of Malawi at the EU bearing in mind that the EU is now the most important economically in the world as well as the best donor in the field of cooperation. I promise we will be the ambassadors of Malawi in the EU. In the MOU Spain and Malawi have identified areas of cooperation in agriculture and food and nutrition security, disaster risk reduction, renewable energies, sustainable tourism and cooperation in educational and cultural exchanges. In his remarks, Dr Chaponda disclosed that Spain has given Malawi based on the MOU an initial USD5Million with a view to accomplishing the Millenium Development Goals (MDGs) that still remain unaccomplished. ...there is need that we forge ahead to address issues of the MDGs in which we are lagging behind. We know we have done very well in four areas of the MDGs but we have still got the other four which include reducing poverty and increasing access to education in which we need assistance. The present MOU shall apply from the date of signing and will have a period of implementation of five years, subject to tacit renewal for subsequent same periods, unless one of the signitories notifies the other in writing of its intention not to renew at least six months prior to the date of expiration.
