Spanish TV boss wants more matches between 12pm and 4pm MediaPro supremo Jaume Roures is hoping that more La Liga matches can be played earlier in the afternoons, to help boost viewing figures in Asia. MediaPro, the leading rights holder for live television coverage of La Liga matches, want to see more matches played between mid-day and 4pm on Saturdays and Sundays, according to their company President, Jaume Roures. He believes that not only will such a move help improve viewing audiences in the key Asian market, but that it also will be more beneficial to the clubs. “The clubs are seriously considering the proposal for this season. We’ll see what the final outcome of the discussions is. Ultimately, television would benefit from this, but the primary beneficiaries would also be the clubs. The Asian market is amongst our most important targets. La Liga plays a major part and in this region, but has had problems developing its presence.” Roures admitted that the Asian football audience favours the English Premier League, but he is hoping to change that, by offering live matches at their prime-time viewing hours. “They don’t have particularly strong local teams in Asia when it comes to viewing figures. Their point of reference is the teams of the Premier League. We’re hoping to change this one step at a time and playing matches from mid-day, forms part of a plan of action on the part of La Liga and its clubs.” The “El Clasico” confrontations between Barcelona and Real Madrid are known to attract some of the highest television audiences in world football. Roures indicated that he is trying to encourage the two giants of Spanish football to accommodate the idea of mid-day matches between the teams and believes that afternoon matches will also help boost dwindling La Liga match attendances. “I would really like it if El Clasico between Barcelona and Real Madrid could be played at mid-day. It should be something that becomes more common place. Given the difficulty of making our presence felt in Asia, playing such matches between mid-day and 4pm would be the best time. Real Madrid have already pioneered playing matches at such a time. Barcelona have some reservations, but using the example of their match against Getafe last season, with the stadium practically, I think this has begun to open their eyes to the idea.”.
