Speaking as someone who accepted Islam, if I forgo my own cultural identity for the dominant one in my religious community, I feel that Im sentencing myself and my children to lives as second class citizens. The challenge is that there are folks in that dominant community who attack any religious expression that seeks to cleanse my cultural ethos, but will use their own culture to treat me, as a convert, as inferior, based on their own culture. So, while Im not able to use my cultural equity, it is used against me. In some cases, to violate my humanity. I have never been humiliated by non-Muslims the way Ive been by Muslims. Even now, with the glitz and glam, I feel like Jordan trying to renegotiate owning the Wizard, only to slapped and told, not this far, buddy. Those of us who accepted Islam in this country need to realize that if we dont take care of each other and honor each other, our future and the dignity of out lineage is suspect. It is time we seriously think about making some moves to use our cultural equity and build. This is not an attempt to divide, but survive.
