Speaking in the Seanad today (Thursday) on International Women’s Day, Fine Gael Dublin South West Senator, Cait Keane, said that the Government has firmly put gender equality on the political agenda. “International Women’s Day gives us an opportunity to celebrate the contribution that women make to public life and to wider society. Women have the ability to be great leaders and have demonstrated this throughout history. Only last week, President Michael D Higgins said that he believes women bring a set of communication skills to the workplace that is well suited to the team-oriented leadership of the 21st century. “The Electoral Amendment Bill is a progressive piece of legislation that will help address the gender imbalance in the Dáil. It will introduce gender quotas for candidates to ensure the electorate is given a wider choice at election time. By ensuring there are 30% female and 30% male candidates we can help to change the face of our national parliament, and make it much more representative of society of a whole. “This followed on from the Government’s pro-active move to advance gender equality by launching the National Action Plan on the United Nations Security Resolution 1325. This ground-breaking Resolution calls on all nations to implement policies that reflect women’s experiences of conflict, enabling them to access formal peace building processes. “I look forward to discussing the merits of the Electoral Amendment Bill when it is debated at Report stage in the Seanad next week.”
