Speaking of California, heres a look back at Rodney King. Remember what a crazy lunatic maniac we were told he was, with the PCP (currently many a trust-funders party drug of choice)? How wild and out of control? How the cops just had no choice in the matter and were later acquitted? The riots that broke out? Oh, those people were so crazy, remember? Buncha criminals. The TVs, so sad, leaving their little shops. But just watch 20 seconds of this interview with him, thats all I have to say, and come back and tell me whos got animalistic tendencies? 1992. That was the same year that a cross was burned on a black classmates lawn at my high school, a girl Id known since middle school who lived in a white neighborhood (I was invited over once, it was like a magical dream house). Some people called her an oreo in middle school. I was like, whats that, and they told me. I remember being pretty unimpressed with the information. After school, I told my mom about it and she told me that wasnt nice at all and that my classmate was a lovely girl and a good student. This she insisted on repeatedly and never let me forget it. Thanks, Ma : ) I dont remember any investigation into the cross-burning, maybe everybody figured they were just hooligan kids, no biggie. We had a grad student teaching us freshman history so he liked to be called by his first name and swore a lot and he showed us videos of Selma and police dogs and we watched Mississippi Burning. We could have probably done a little reading, too, but hey, the education system has got its flaws. Lastly, I remember the sit-in that the black students had in the locker hall atrium after the acquittal. Everybody else, including the teachers, paused momentarily to gawk at the large group of students protesting. I peered down from the second floor of the atrium in silence, puzzled, even bewildered, before walking home from school. Everybody said Rodney King was guilty.
