Special Thank you to Hiromi Oshima for translation! BURRN January 2015 issue ANVIL On this tour, Anvil are not only playing Tokyo, Nagoya and Osaka, but are also stretching their legs to play Sendai, Niigata, Hiroshima and Fukuoka as well. The first show of the tour was a two-night engagement at Tokyo’s Shinjuku Loft. I attended the second show on October 27th. On this tour, Anvil were featuring a number of varying opening acts, with a different band each night. This show was opened by Maverick and Hellhound. Both bands are true power metal bands, and many were wondering if they wouldn’t upstage the headliners. However, the truth was that everyone were overwhelmingly there to see ANVIL. When Lips (g,vo), Robb Reiner (dr) and new member Chris Robertson (b) took the stage, everyone screamed. Although this was a post-Loud Park show, and that the band was not exactly A-list, the club, while not overcrowded, was filled out quite nicely. The afterglow of the movie “ANVIL: The Story of ANVIL” was still felt. It has been 33 years since their debut. Unless Lips or Rob leave the group, nothing is going to change (no, if either of them left the group then that would end the band), and their performance this night was exactly the kind the fans were expecting. The set list consisted of songs from their oldest three albums and songs from their most recent three albums. They showed no signs of being eclectic artists. Of course, Lips playing a funny guitar solo with a vibrator during “Mothra” was also featured. It may sound rude, but you really can’t define the greatness of Anvil, and after so many years, that greatness hasn’t aged. One element is Robb’s heavy, tight and flamboyant drumming. It is amazing. He would make it in a band even if the other members were half his age. Chris performed with consistently shifting basslines. And Lips, with powerful vocals and guitar riffs that tore at the memories in your heart, gave his all with a high-spirited performance, grinning all the time. The band’s joy of returning to Japan, joined with the fans die-hard love and created a very heart-warming evening. (By Tak Meada) [SETLIST] 1. March Of The Crabs 2. 666 3. School Love 4.
