Special section in the NYTimes today on Fresh Air Children brought - TopicsExpress

Special section in the NYTimes today on Fresh Air Children brought to mind my beloved departed friends and second family, Sylvan and Marie Webb of Groton, CT, who took the same two girls every summer for many years. From these extraordinary people I learned a lesson about service to children, not as a career, but as a part of their personal lives. I had a conversation earlier in the week with my brother, who said he wished he had thanked our dads best friend, Frank Shabunia, also of Groton, for his kindness and support after our dads death. So whether you take Fresh Air kids, act as a surrogate dad to your friends orphaned son, take an annoying little neighbor girl into your home at all hours of the day or night, spend your weekends with your special ed. students, teach Sunday school after working all week as a nurse, help plan your daughters best friends wedding, take your daughters best friend into your home for the summer, serve as a Big Brother, or on the board of the Boys and Girls Club, or on the Board of Easter Seals, please know that these kids appreciate you more than they can possibly express, and that even fifty years from now, the love that you showed them will still be remembered.
