Spectacular views await those who hike to Charlies Bunion. This craggy bluff got its name after a wildfire stripped the steep mountain slope of vegetation in 1925, then four years later, a cloudburst scoured the thin veneer of soil from the exposed slope. After the storm, a hiking party headed out to survey the damage. Among the party was Charlie Conner, a local guide and mountaineer. Awed by the destruction, the hiking party felt the newly exposed promontory deserved a name. One of the hikers likened the knobby appearance of the cliffs to Charlie Conner’s bunion. The rest is history… To reach Charlies Bunion, hike the Appalachian Trail from the Newfound Gap Parking Area. The trailhead is next to the Rockefeller Monument and the trail passes the restrooms. The 8.0 mile roundtrip hike is considered strenuous, so allow plenty of time to finish before dark. Wear sturdy hiking shoes and carry a rain jacket. Be sure to pack a lunch, snacks, water, and a camera.
