Speech I wrote for the Kidd Operations meeting I attended for funding for the Angels Amongst Us homeless shelter. As it turned out one of the Board Members of the Good Samaritan Inn was there. Use my suggestions well! Let me begin by introducing myself, my name is Melanie Chartier. When I heard your announcenent on the radio I nearly cried because my foundation is not ready yet but figured hey what have I got to lose! You see I am in the process of forming my life long dream, a non-profit charity foundation. Which when complete will be a registered foundation accompanied by a professional financial consultant firm out of Ottawa who specialize in non-profit organizations. Once complete Angels Amongst Us will be a completely legitimate foundation. However, the reason I am here today is to convince you to become a partner on leaving your mark on city forever! My primary project is to open a new homeless shelter unlike the existing one here in Timmins! One that is much more efficient and that actually helps the residents get back on their feet and build a new life for themselves. Without a helping hand that can offer the resources and avenues to build a new life it is almost an impossible task for a person who has fallen deep into the black hole of pain and anger! You see when the closure does come, it will leave a path of deep depression which will lead to all sorts of addictions substance abuse & other abuses among many people here. In return there will be greater use of the homeless shelter. However, the existing shelter only leaves their residents right where they are homeless and down. The reason for this being they do not give counselling which would let them to treatments for addictions, mental health & health problems. They are not connected to community help organizations, social service resources and many other resources they require to rebuild a life. People who come to a shelter have hit rock bottom are so confused they dont know where to go or what to do. Due to severe trauma many have lost simple living skills and coping skills putting them in dire need of help that can offer all programs, resources and avenues available for their retraining. I speak from experience having been homeless not too long ago. I also speak from experience about the existing shelter having worked as a volunteer and had been a part of an appointed commity for the shelter. The Angels Amongst Us homeless will truly make a difference everyone can see! By connecting with resources such counselling, South Cochrane Addiction Services, Canadian Mental Health Association, Northern College (for programs & graduates from addictions counselling, social services programs etc....) United Way, March of Dimes, Job Connect, College Boreal, Pace, Timmins Family Counselling, Cochrane Detox Center, Timmins & Women in Crisis, VCARS, Timmins Family YMCA and many more....... With this shelter you will not only leave your mark forever on city of Timmins forever but you will generate long lasting employment that will lighten the burden of the closure! The only unfortunate part is, this speech was actually much longer but I only had time for the main details.
