Spent deeply disturbing morning with Awang, young Manipuri call centre worker beaten black & blue by local goons in Gurgaon yesterday. Local youth invited Awang home for a party & beat him with belts, hockeys & cricket bats. Laid trap. Asked him to invite friends. Gurgoan youth didnt want Awang & friends to stay in Sikanderpur. Tonsured his head. His back is black because of the beating. Awang traumatised but insists he will stay back in Delhi & make his career. Despite attack doesnt want to go home. NE students live in pigeon holes in Delhis poorer colonies. Taunted by neighbours. Attacked by goons. Aliens in their own country. As a Delhiite ashamed by the kind of behaviour meted out to our fellow citizens from the North East. And we crib about racism elsewhere! NE Student Association representative says Delhi police under Robin Hibu far more responsive than Gurgaon police that behaves like Neanderthals.
