Spent quite an afternoon on the Hill watching Simone testify about poverty before Rep. Paul Ryan’s House Budget Committee. Lots of questions from many Representative (2 ½ hours!), but the most bizarre moment came when Rep. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) – a real twit – decided to question how “Catholic” Simone is since Catholic Sisters were criticized by the Vatican last year! Then, amazingly, Paul Ryan rose to Simone’s defense, saying she and he may differ on budget matters but she was certainly a good Catholic. This, after the big Nuns on the Bus trip last year criticizing his budget! He came over after the hearing and was so friendly. Okay, he has risen somewhat in my estimation (although he is wrong, wrong, wrong on budget cuts). As for Blackburn – well, I don’t think I’ve ever described someone as a “twit” on FB before. Actually, I was being charitable!
