Spiritual Cataracts (Luke 18 : 35-43 ) There is a woman who had cataracts in her eyes. She said that she had never had problems with her eyes. Then suddenly her vision started to deteriorate. At first it didn’t bother her too much, but later she became completely blind. The optometrist told her that she had cataracts. When a person gets cataracts a cloudy substance forms inside the eyes. This prevents light to penetrate the eye. The only cure is by surgery. Because the woman was not on medical aid, she could not afford surgery. About a year later a mobile clinic visited the town and she was placed on a waiting list for surgery. At first, the cataract on one eye was surgery removed and then the other. Now, after several years of blindness, she can see again. She says that her eyes are even better than before. Most of us can see. We can see the beauty of nature, the beauty of people and our environment. But there are many who can physically see, yet they’re blind. Now, I’m not talking of children who cannot see that their bed is still not made or those who cannot see their toys on the floor. I’m not talking of those who do not see the necessity to learn. No, Im talking about people who are spiritually blind, who fail to see Jesus. Yes, there are many people who are spiritually blind. They have spiritual Cataracts. Lets see what causes spiritual blindness. The first cause is sin and the justification thereof. Sin prevents us to serve Jesus in Spirit and in truth. The second cause of spiritual blindness is the love of money or things. People focus on getting more money or things and spend less time with the Lord. A third cause is the desire to have power. Some people want it so badly that they forget to seek Gods will. An example of this is children who would like to be a prefect or captain. They become loveless and end up fighting for positions rather than to allow God to promote them. One more thing that is harmful to our vision is our quest for pleasure. We want to have fun rather than to do what’s right. We want to party rather than to spend time with the Lord. But how do we deal with this spiritual blindness? The woman mentioned above had to go for surgery. Luckily, we do not need to go for the same. All we have to do is to turn to Jesus and like the blind man in Luke 18 say: Lord, I want to see. Then Jesus will say: See! And well see. But where do we start? We start by inviting Jesus into our lives and ask Him to forgive us our sins. Then, with our forgiveness we will be healed of our blindness. Let us not wander or walk around blindly. Blind people fall and get hurt. Turn to Jesus today and see.
